Chapter 25

‘Stop frownin’, we’ll be fine,’ her father said as Reggie helped load the suitcase in his the car. ‘It’s just a specialist check-up.’

‘I know, but I think it would save a lot of stress if you didn’t have to drive. I said I was happy to take you.’

‘Save a lot of stress? Drivin’ in Sydney with you last time pretty much gave me a bloody ulcer.’

‘Okay, fair point,’ she had to concede. She was a terrible city driver.

‘Besides, we’re only driving as far as Duncan’s place, and they’ll be taking me in to the specialist.’ Her dad’s younger brother and his family had been lifesavers during the first scary weeks after the accident. They lived near Newcastle, so they’d been on hand to help with travelling to and from hospitals and rehab stays. ‘Your mother wanted to try a trip away. We’ve been trying to get her back out and about and this seems like a good place to start.’

‘Yeah, I know. It’s great she wants to leave home for a bit. I just hope it’s not too much.’

‘Stop bloody mollycoddling us,’ Ray grumbled, and instantly Reggie felt contrite.

‘Sorry,’ she sighed. She knew how hard it had been for them but she also understood how difficult it must be for a parent who’d always taken care of their child to suddenly have their child taking care of them—especially when that transition felt premature.

‘Look,’ her father said, softening his tone as he turned towards her, ‘I know there’re a lot of things we can’t do anymore and we just have to accept that, but the things we can do, well … we need to keep doin’ them while we still can. Aunty Mary will take care of your mum and they’ll have a nice catch-up, so she won’t be stuck in the car any longer than she has to be. And I won’t be under any stress drivin’ through the city because Duncan will take me to my specialist visit. So, see? It’s all under control.’

Reggie summoned a smile and gave her father a hug. ‘Okay, I’ll stop worrying.’

When her mother came out, Reggie helped settle her into the car and stepped back, waving as they drove off. It will be good for them to get away for a few days, she thought as the last of the dust settled back on the dirt driveway and the car disappeared from sight. But she knew she’d still be worrying until they got back home again.

‘Hey,’ Tim’s deep voice came from behind her and she jumped, swinging around with a curse. ‘Sorry, I thought you heard me coming.’

‘No, I didn’t. You scared the hell out of me,’ she snapped. She took a breath and gave him an apologetic smile. ‘Sorry. I must have been a million miles away.’

‘Your parents going away?’

‘Yeah—just for a couple of days. Dad’s got a specialist appointment in Sydney.’

‘I could have taken them down if they needed,’ Tim said, looking down the driveway.

‘Nope. I tried. Dad wants to get Mum away for a few days.
